The Third Trimester - Months 7-9

  • Week 28 - Baby has hit the 2 pound mark. Around this time you will begin to really put on the weight, this will last until about week thirty-six. Weight gained during pregnancy is not fat or unhealthy, but necessary for a healthy pregnancy and baby. The most important thing to remember is that a healthy diet is more important than what you gain.

  • Week 30 - The fetus is usually capable of living outside the womb and would be considered premature at birth.

  • Week 32 - The baby sleeps 90-95% of the day, and sometimes experiences REM sleep, an indication of dreaming. Your baby has gained about 2 pounds of weight, mostly fat and muscle tissue, since last month, bringing the total to about three pounds eleven ounces. He measures about 16 inches.

  • Week 34 - Baby is 4 1/2 lbs. The hormones from the placenta are starting to activate the milk in your breasts.

  • Week 36 - Most babies will be in a head down position at this point. The baby continues to grow and snuggle down into your pelvis. The benefit of this is that you can breathe more easily, however, you also have to urinate more often.

  • Week 38 - You may begin to feel electrical buzzes down your legs. This is caused from the baby hitting nerves as he settles into your pelvis. Consider taking a tour of the hospital where your baby will be born. Your hospital probably has a program available for prospective parents.

  • Week 40 - Your baby's due date has arrived. Your baby is probably one of the 96% of babies who is head down and deeply snuggled into your pelvis. The baby's immune system is still immature and the baby receives antibodies from the placenta and after birth they will receive antibodies continually from your breast milk. The average baby is 7 1/2 lbs. and 20 inches long at birth.
